SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 3): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:From September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test takes approximately three hours in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the first two portions of the test. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the LSA Language Requirement.Where can I view my results? Placement results are posted within 7 business days after taking the test. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test* Please note that only students who are participating in the Spring/Summer orientations are eligible to take the online placement test. If you are an existing UM student\, please sign up to take the in-person placement test that is taking place in August.* Placements are valid for only one year. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Co-Fractionation ‘Multi-omics’ Mass Spectrometry for Lipid-Protein Interactome Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Lipids play essential roles in regulating various biological processes through functional interactions with integral or peripherally associated proteins and protein complexes. While mass spectrometry (MS)-based strategies have enabled global lipidome and proteome identification and quantitative profiling\, high-throughput strategies to investigate the lipid-protein ‘interactome’ at the systems level are currently lacking. Here\, I will first describe the development of advanced ‘shotgun’ lipidomics data acquisition workflows\, including the use of ion-mobility for selective enrichment of low abundance lipid classes\, and UV-photodissociation MS/MS to enable complete lipid structural characterisation [e.g.\, Anal. Chem. 2024\, 96\, 12296-12307.\; Anal. Bioanal. Chem. 2020\, 412\, 2339–2351.]\, and their application to characterise a novel cause of autosomal regressive multisystem mitochondrial disease resulting from deleterious variants in cardiolipin synthase 1 (CRLS1) [Human Mol. Genetics. 2022\, 31\, 3597-3612.]. Next\, using an integrated ‘multi-omics’ workflow for comprehensive lipidome and proteome profiling\, I will report that the knockout of non-mitochondrial genes in peroxisome\, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi organelles also results in mitochondrial dysfunction\, caused by unexpected alterations in ether-glycerophospholipid metabolic pathways [Nature. Cell Biol. 2024\, 26\, 57-71]. Finally\, to investigate the lipid–protein interaction relationships in these systems\, a novel Co-Fractionation Multi-Omics Mass Spectrometry (CF-MOMS) strategy will be described to characterise global alterations in the lipid-protein ‘interactome interactomes in WT and CRLS1KO cell lines\, and to highlight the functional involvement of cardiolipin-protein interactions in maintaining the assembly/stability and activity of mitochondrial membrane proteins.

DESCRIPTION:“Irrepressible verve and joy.” –Daniel Bracken\, Wheatland Music Festival\n\nOne time garage rock troubadour Dave Boutette\, and former Radio City Rockette Kristi Lynn Davis make what could be considered an unexpected musical pairing\, but they have certainly found a way to make it work. Since pairing Dave’s celebrated songwriting with Kristi’s natural gift for harmony\, the duo has delighted audiences at music festivals\, house concerts\, and listening rooms from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to the Maryland shore. Their most recent release THE CHICKADEES reached #11 on the Folk DJ Chart in June of 2025.\n\nFor additional spark in the set list that night\, Dave & Kristi will be bringing along Jason Dennie on mandolin and Brad Phillips on fiddle.\n\nDave & Kristi’s songs mix many schools of American roots and popular music including folk\, blues\, swing\, and old time country. DESCRIPTION:Epic acoustic classic rock\n\nMike Massé is an internationally acclaimed artist and arranger who performs epic acoustic classic rock. He is a YouTube icon with over 195 million channel views. Legends of rock like Toto\, Boston\, Sarah McLachlan\, Styx\, Rush\, Berlin\, Asia\, and others have expressed love and gratitude for his acoustic renditions of their songs. Toto cites his acoustic cover of “Africa” as their favorite.  \n\nMike initially gained notoriety for his performances posted on his widely viewed YouTube channel. The success of that channel allowed him to quit his day job as a public defender after 13 years and move his family to Denver to become a full-time musician who performs around the world.\n\nMike’s acoustic arrangements are praised for their originality\, creativity\, accuracy and simplicity. He is careful to remain true to what is beloved about the original recordings\, while bringing his own masterful musical flair to each rendition.

DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. DESCRIPTION:“an artist known for beguiling melodies and a supple turn of a phrase.” –American Songwriter\n\nIn January 2024\, Kim Richey found herself in Mexico\, gazing out at a sea of people singing along to “I’m Alright\,” one of her classic tracks. The three folks on stage with the veteran\, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter were also raising their voices in harmony. To her right sat Brandi Carlile\, to her left\, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Brandy Clark. The formidable foursome was participating in a songwriter’s round only half-jokingly dubbed “Titans of Americana” at Carlile’s female-forward Girls Just Wanna Weekend festival on the Riviera Maya in Mexico.\n\n“That was nuts looking out and seeing everybody arm-waving and singing along\,” says Richey\, still both incredulous and cheered by the memory of performing with that supergroup and later appearing alongside other Girls Just Wanna Weekend-ers Annie Lennox\, Lucius\, Allison Russell\, and Sarah McLachlan among others. “It was just like\, ‘wow’!”\n\nThe good news for fans of this particular Titan is a whole new batch of songs to sing along with and arm wave to with the release of her 10th studio album Every New Beginning. The 10 songs on Every New Beginning represent the full spectrum of the Ohio native’s gifts as both a revered songwriter who can leap from melancholy to mirthful in a single couplet — whose songs have been recorded by the likes of Brooks and Dunn\, Patty Loveless\, and Mary Chapin Carpenter — and owner of one of music’s truly celestial voices. \n\nThat voice\, which Brandi Carlile has cited as formative in crafting her own style\, is a widely sought after harmony instrument and has been featured on scores of albums including Jason Isbell’s acclaimed Southeastern\, Trisha Yearwood’s Everybody Knows\, Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams\, Reba McEntire’s Starting Over\, and Has Been by Capt. SUMMARY:Performance:Peter Mulvey & Jenna Nicholls present Floyd Mercantile
DESCRIPTION:In April 2025\, Peter Mulvey and Jenna Nicholls\, along with guitarist Ross Bellenoit\, traveled to Floyd\, a small mountain town located in the Blue Ridge Highlands of Southwest Virginia\, for five uninterrupted days of recording. What emerged is Floyd Mercantile — a record that feels both intimate and timeless.\n\nThe makeshift studio was a decommissioned general store called (you guessed it!) Floyd Mercantile — a weathered wooden building standing across the road from an open pasture where cows wandered and grazed in the gentle early spring. (One cow even volunteered to be on the album cover.) Inside those old walls\, the trio recorded the album live — no isolation booths\, no heavy overdubbing — just three musicians in a room\, listening closely and letting the songs unfold in real time.\n\nThe sessions were recorded by Jeff Oehler and filmed in their entirety by partner Sue Bibeau and their associate Skylar Locke. Together\, Sue and Jeff comprise Beehive Pro\, an audio\, visual\, and design collective famed for their intimate recordings and thoughtfully considered visuals.\n\nThey captured not just the sound\, but the atmosphere — the wood floors\, the daylight through the dusty windows\, and the creak of the porch boards could all be considered session players on this album.\n\nThe repertoire bridges eras. Mostly comprised of songs Peter and Jenna wrote separately\, there are a few gems from the Great American Songbook: “Skylark\" (Hoagy Carmichael/Johnny Mercer)\, “Them There Eyes\" (Maceo Pinkard/Doris Tauber/William Tracey)\, and “I'll Be Seeing\nYou\" (Sammy Fain/Irving Kahal).\n\n\nThe visual and sonic tones of the project reflect the periods these songs evoke — even the newly composed tracks feel in conversation with another time. The goal was not nostalgia\, but continuity: to stand inside the lineage of American song and add something honest and present to it.\n\nFloyd Mercantile is not just an album. It’s a document of place. Of three musicians in a room. Of songs — old and new — allowed to breathe in the quiet of a Virginia afternoon.

DESCRIPTION:From September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“The Tale of a Weevil”
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2026 Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS)\, Dr. Bénédicte Boisseron will give a free\, public talk titled\, “The Tale of a Weevil.”\n\nBoisseron is professor and chair of the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan and an affiliate faculty in Romances Languages and Literature\, and Comparative Literature.\n\nHer interdisciplinary scholarship bridges Global Black Studies and the Environmental Humanities through literary\, historical\, and artistic perspectives.\n\nThis talk will use a magnifying glass to examine an environmental crisis of epic proportions in the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique.\n\nFrom 1972 to 1993\, a highly toxic pesticide was sprayed on weevil-infested banana plantations in the islands\, despite known health risks\, largely due to pressure from powerful white planter elites and the economic importance of the banana industry.\n\nThe resulting health impact on the population has come to symbolize how the colonial is often inextricable from the ecological. But what about the weevil?\n\nThis talk responds to environmental scholar Malcolm Ferdinand’s call to also look at the weevil in this dramatic story.\n\nBoisseron is the author of “Creole Renegades: Rhetoric of Betrayal and Guilt in the Caribbean Diaspora” (2014) and “Afro-Dog: Blackness and the Animal Question” (2018).\n\nHer current book project focuses on food repurposing and was supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship\, alongside additional funding for her broader work on repurposing practices.\n\nHer recent publications examine pesticide contamination on banana plantations in the French Antilles.\n\nIn Winter 2024\, Boisseron taught Food Literacy for All as a faculty instructor and is a Sustainable Food Systems Initiative Affiliate.\n\nThe University of Michigan Biological Station serves as a gathering place to learn from the natural world\, advance research and education\, and inspire action. We leverage over a century of research and transformative experiences to drive discoveries and solutions to benefit Michigan and beyond.\n\nFounded in 1909\, UMBS supports long-term research and education through immersive\, field-based courses and features state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for data collection and analysis to help any field researcher be productive.
