SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 3): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:From September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. DESCRIPTION:Country-tinged roots rock\n\nMark Jewett is an insightful Michigan native storyteller who writes songs that push the boundaries of Americana into an uncommon blend of folk\, rock\, blues\, and prog rock. In them\, listeners will hear and feel honesty\, gratitude\, and thoughtful introspection\, with doses of humor and drama to vary the pace. His songs betray the effort he makes to find just the right words\, taking cues from the likes of Randy Newman\, John Prine\, and Nick Lowe.\n\nMark assembled the band known as The Strategic Advisors to record his 2nd full length album\, “The Lucky One\,” released in 2021. The band is comprised of some of SE Michigan’s finest musicians\, including Billy Harrington (drums & vocals)\, Michael Harrington (pedal steel\, electric & acoustic guitars)\, Ken Pesick (bass)\, Amy Petty (vocals & guitar) and Dale Grisa (keyboards). The band is extremely versatile and sonically\, they make Mark's tunes span the wide space between classic folk and epic soundscapes you might expect to hear from Pink Floyd. Somehow\, it all fits together to provide an attention grabbing extravaganza.\n\nDetroit-based indie-folk band Jackamo opens. Led by sisters Alison and Tessa Wiercioch (vocals) and Jimmy Showers (guitar)\, and known for their blood harmonies\, acoustic textures\, and lyric-driven storytelling\, their sound is intimate\, nostalgic\, and always evolving.

DESCRIPTION:“…unpredictable\, engaging and cathartic…Day’s grasp of the musical veil and reveal is uncanny” –Glide Magazine\n\nHowie Day’s emotionally resonant lyrics and inventive melodies have earned him both critical praise and a legion of devoted fans. He is known for his energetic\, heartfelt shows\, where he connects with audiences through the strength of his songwriting and his quirky sense of humor. Day’s warm tenor voice “soars into fluttering\, high registers\, but also grates with real\, pleading grit\,” as one critic put it. \n\nA native of Bangor\, Maine\, Day began playing piano at age five and guitar at age 12. By 15\, he was writing his own songs and performing across New England. Shortly after graduating high school\, Day became a fixture at college coffeehouses across the U.S. He wrote\, financed\, and released his first effort\, Australia\, which was named Best Debut Album at the 2001 Boston Music Awards. \n\nDay began experimenting with effects pedals and loop-sampling techniques as he performed\, layering live percussion with vocal harmonies and guitar parts to become a veritable one-man band. He went on to sell over 30\,000 copies of Australia as he navigated the independent music scene and continued to hone his craft. After signing with Epic Records\, Day released his\nmajor-label debut\, Stop All The World Now\, and hit the road to support it. Since the release of this ground breaking album 20 years ago\, featuring 4x platinum single \"Collide\"\, Howie Day continues to astound audiences with his everlasting music. Two additional studio albums (Sound The Alarm\, Lanterns) and his incredible live show will no doubt cultivate life changing and poignant moments for people around the world for many years to come.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Creating the Future of Medicine for 175 Years
DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. DESCRIPTION:The Detroit Observatory was once a hub of astronomical discovery that put the University of Michigan on the map as a world-class research institution. A century later\, it was an abandoned building with an uncertain future. From cornerstone to keystone\, from the first director to the people who saved it from destruction\, explore the life of a historic observatory 170 years in the making.\n\n\"Watcher of the Sky\" is being developed by student docents at the Detroit Observatory. DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 3): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:From September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2026 Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS)\, Dr. Jay Goldberg will give the Bennett Lecture in Mycology and Plant Biology. The free\, public talk is titled\, “Unravelling the Relationships of the Natural World with Biodiversity Genomics.”\n\nGoldberg is an Indigenous (Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians) evolutionary biologist who uses cutting-edge genetic tools to study interactions between chemically defended plants and their specialist herbivores in the Sonoran Desert.\n\nHe is now starting an independent lab as a presidential scholar at Arizona State University to uncover the (co)evolutionary processes that shape plant-insect interactions in the Sonoran Desert\, focusing primarily on the sacred Datura plant (Datura wrightii) and its community of highly specialized insect herbivores that can tolerate the myriad chemical defenses produced by this iconic native plant.\n\nCoevolution\, when interacting species exert selection upon one another\, has fascinated biologists for decades.  Research on coevolution is historically limited to theoretical studies or controlled experimentation with tractable model systems\; now\, however\, modern genomics techniques have ushered in a new era of research that explores coevolutionary processes in naturally interacting populations of organisms.  \n\nGoldberg’s fascination with plant-insect interactions began during a post-baccalaureate internship at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology.\n\nHe went on to complete his Ph.D. at Indiana University before doing two postdocs: one in Judie Bronstein’s lab at the University of Arizona and another in Saskia Hogenhout’s lab at the John Innes Centre.\n\nWhen he’s not working\, Goldberg enjoys playing drums\, cooking fancy food for his friends\, and hiking with his dog.\n\nThe University of Michigan Biological Station serves as a gathering place to learn from the natural world\, advance research and education\, and inspire action. We leverage over a century of research and transformative experiences to drive discoveries and solutions to benefit Michigan and beyond.\n\nFounded in 1909\, UMBS supports long-term research and education through immersive\, field-based courses and features state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for data collection and analysis to help any field researcher be productive.
