SUMMARY:Exhibition:Creating the Future of Medicine for 175 Years
DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. There are also activities for young visitors.\n\nThe museum is open to the public every Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.\n\nFull details about the exhibit\, including parking instructions and how to book a free private group tour on a weekday\, are available at http://michmed.org/museum\n\nThe museum has an accessible entrance at the rear of the building.

DESCRIPTION:Infectious folk-pop from Austin\, Texas\n\nWild Child is the Austin-born songwriting partnership of Kelsey Wilson and Alexander Beggins\, a duo whose chemistry has powered more than a decade of acclaimed indie-folk releases and spirited live shows. What began as a spontaneous creative spark in the back of a tour van evolved into one of Austin’s most beloved bands\, known for warm harmonies\, candid storytelling\, and an ever-evolving blend of folk\, pop\, and soulful brass-driven arrangements. After years of near-constant touring and the launch of their individual projects - Wilson’s Motown-leaning Sir Woman and Beggins’ dream-pop alter ego CoCo Zandi - the pair stepped back to explore new sounds and space\, unsure when or how Wild Child might return.\n\nThat return arrived in an unexpected moment of stillness. When the world shut down and stages went dark\, Wilson and Beggins found themselves back in a room together\, preparing for online performances\, rediscovering the spark that shaped their earliest songs. DESCRIPTION:From September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Pettingill Lecture in Natural History: “Beavers: Architects of Climate Resilience”
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2026 Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS)\, Dr. Emily Fairfax will give the Pettingill Lecture in Natural History. The free\, public talk is titled “Beavers: Architects of Climate Resilience.”\n\nFairfax is an assistant professor of geography at the University of Minnesota and an affiliate faculty member at the Saint Anthony Falls Laboratory.\n\nShe uses a combination of remote sensing\, modeling\, and field work to understand how beaver ecosystem engineering can create drought and fire-resistant patches in the landscape under a changing climate. \n\nBeaver dams and beaver mimicry (e.g. Beaver Dam Analogs) are gaining popularity as a low‐cost\, nature-based strategy to build climate resiliency at the landscape scale.\n\nHere in the Great Lakes Region\, we are experiencing wetter winters\, hotter and drier summers\, flashier storms\, and a longer frost-free season.\n\nBeaver ecosystem engineering can help mitigate some of these impacts on local to watershed scales.\n\nBeavers slow and store water in their ponds\, canals\, and the surrounding soil during flood periods which can then be accessed by riparian vegetation during droughts.\n\nAs a result\, the well-watered vegetation in beaver-dammed riparian corridors is less flammable. \n\nFairfax’s research has shown that these beaver-influenced patches of the landscape stay green and can serve as climate refugia\, preserving intact\, mature riparian habitat\, even during extreme drought and fire.\n\nShe suggests that perhaps instead of relying solely on human engineering and management to create and maintain healthy waterways and riparian zones\, humans could benefit from partnering with beaver’s ecosystem engineering to achieve the same goals at a lower cost. \n\nFairfax double majored in chemistry and physics as an undergraduate at Carleton College\, then went on to earn a Ph.D. in geological sciences with an emphasis in hydrologic sciences from the University of Colorado Boulder.\n\nHer research has been featured internationally in National Geographic\, the New York Times\, the LA Times\, PBS\, NPR\, BBC\, and others. When Fairfax says she can talk about beavers all day\, she’s not kidding.\n\nThe University of Michigan Biological Station serves as a gathering place to learn from the natural world\, advance research and education\, and inspire action. We leverage over a century of research and transformative experiences to drive discoveries and solutions to benefit Michigan and beyond.\n\nFounded in 1909\, UMBS supports long-term research and education through immersive\, field-based courses and features state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for data collection and analysis to help any field researcher be productive. It is where students and scientists from across the globe live and work as a community to learn from the place.\n\nThe Summer Lecture Series is a tradition at UMBS\, where we explore scientific topics with distinguished guest speakers from across the country so the community can learn about our natural world.\n\nThe free\, public talks are on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in the spring and summer in Gates Lecture Hall at the University of Michigan Biological Station\, located at 9133 Biological Rd. in Pellston\, Michigan — about 20 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 3): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:From September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. DESCRIPTION:Heartfulness Guided Meditation is a weekly\, drop-in program designed to help you Mental well-being. \n\nAll U-M students\, faculty\, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required. \n\n*What will you learn?*\n\nThe guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation\, rejuvenation\, and meditation.\n\nRelaxation brings your body to a calm\, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level\, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions\, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Creating the Future of Medicine for 175 Years
DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. There are also activities for young visitors.\n\nThe museum is open to the public every Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.\n\nFull details about the exhibit\, including parking instructions and how to book a free private group tour on a weekday\, are available at http://michmed.org/museum\n\nThe museum has an accessible entrance at the rear of the building.
