SUMMARY:Performance:Time Passes: 8 Short Plays by Samuel Beckett
DESCRIPTION:Samuel Beckett\, best known for his plays *Waiting for Godot* and *Endgame*\, was a leader in the Theatre of the Absurd movement. His works remain the best-known and most-performed absurdist plays\, which are known for their tragicomic tone and the notion that life has no meaning. \n\nIn this series of short plays\, which were written in the mid-20th century\, Beckett plays with language\, settings\, repetition\, and relationships to find the ridiculous underpinnings of life\, death\, and everything else. \n\nFeatured plays: \n*Act Without Words II*\n*Play* \n*Come and Go*\n*Footfalls*\n*Rockaby*\n*Catastrophe*\n*What Where*\n*Quad*\n\nWritten by Samuel Beckett\n\nDirected by Malcolm Tulip

SUMMARY:Performance:An intimate evening with Copeland
DESCRIPTION:New music alongside old favorites\, with moments that feel close\, dynamic\, and reimagined for an intimate acoustic show\n\nLongevity in music comes through pushing yourself and expanding the possibilities of your sound. This has never been more true for Copeland on their latest effort Blushing\, a collection of 11 tracks that advance and evolve everything the trio of musicians has done up until now. The band\, which originally formed in Lakeland\, Florida in 2001\, has unveiled six albums\, spanning from their 2003’s debut Beneath Medicine Tree to 2016’s Ixora. While they began as a rock band\, Copeland’s music has explored multiple genres and pulled in various stylistic influences like electronic and symphonic. In the past the musicians have aptly melded these styles\, creating a unique amalgam of sounds. This time they wanted to take each sound and style and push it to its logical extreme.\n\nThe album is a strong step forward for Copeland\, who plans to continue writing and releasing music together for the foreseeable future. The band\, who have toured with the likes of Brand New\, Goo Goo Dolls\, Bob Mould\, Switchfoot\, Motion City Soundtrack and Guster\, will also tour on the new material. In many ways\, Blushing encapsulates the band’s impressive career\, while also showcasing their evolution into mature songwriters and producers. It reveals how the strength of each individual component that makes up Copeland’s sound.

DESCRIPTION:Powerful\, groove-oriented jazz-rock fusion\n\nThe Bad Plus are the ultimate originals. A democratic unit with a clear vision and a refusal to conform to convention. For the past two decades they have played with spirit and adventure\, made their own rules and done so with a bold sense of creativity and intent. Avoiding easy categorization\, The Bad Plus has won critical acclaim and a legion of fans worldwide with their unique sound and flair for live performance.\n\nThe Bad Plus continues to push boundaries as founding members Reid Anderson (bass) and Dave King (drums) embark on a new piano-less incarnation of the band with Ben Monder (guitar) and Chris Speed (tenor saxophone) – instigating a new wave of excitement and anticipation within the band that is re-energizing their sound and inspiration. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Robust and Risk-Sensitive Acceleration in Gradient Methods
DESCRIPTION:First-order methods such as gradient descent (GD) are foundational in optimization. In unconstrained problems with exact gradients\, momentum-based methods—most notably Nesterov’s accelerated gradient descent (AGD) and Polyak’s heavy-ball (HB) method—achieve faster convergence by improving dependence on the condition number. However\, this acceleration comes at a cost: momentum amplifies gradient noise\, making these methods less robust than GD under standard parameter choices and requiring more accurate gradient estimates to attain comparable accuracy. Similar challenges arise in convex and nonconvex min–max optimization.\nMotivated by applications in machine learning\, this talk studies unconstrained and min–max optimization under deterministic\, unbiased stochastic\, and biased stochastic gradient noise. I will present new algorithms that achieve optimal robustness against different noise types\, using control-theoretic tools such as the H_2 norm\, the H_∞ norm\, and the risk-sensitivity index\, together with coherent risk measures. I will also discuss worst-case noise constructions and high-probability convergence guarantees. This perspective builds a bridge between optimization and robust control theory and enables the design of noise-robust and risk-sensitive accelerated methods.\nRepresentative Publications:\nM. SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Complexity in the Social World: The Challenging Case of ‘Place’
DESCRIPTION:October 8-9\, 2026 | Institute for Social Research\n\nThe challenge: New data and approaches to study complexity in the social world has often been without a concurrent focus on the foundations of scientific inquiry\, including complex thinking\, broad causal thinking\, attention to epistemic lens\, and integrating multiple disciplinary approaches. Further\, the academic research model\, with its resource-segregated networks\, discipline-specific training\, and short-term productivity metrics\, contributes to a fragmented and potentially misleading understanding of the social world. In the second annual ISR Symposium on Complexity in the Social World\, we will use ‘place’ as the case study to facilitate discussions on rigorous social science in the public interest. \n\nUsing research on place as the case study\, discussion topics will include:\n- Complex thinking about the social world\n- The contribution of the humanities the study of the social world\n- Epistemic lens and research transparency\n- Theories\, frameworks\, and the limits of traditional causal inference\n- The draw and danger of cool new data \n- Addressing the challenges of the academic model of science\n\nPresentations on the science of place will include:\n- The relational nature of place in population social inequalities\n- The role of history in shaping place\n- The racialization of place\; the spatialization of race\n- Place as a neutral and rational driver of social inequalities\n- Approaches to testing (causal) ideas around place\n\nThe Institute for Social Research will provide 35 travel awards for early career scholars who are building a career around the interdisciplinary science of place. These awards are intended to reduce financial barriers for those who are not currently affiliated with the University of Michigan. The awards are designed to broaden participation\, support scholarly development\, and expand the network of scholars engaged with the symposium themes. Travel awards will cover coach class airfare\, symposium hotel\, and ground airport transportation. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis\, from July 1\, 2026 until September 4\, 2026. Details and application at https://myumi.ch/DWGnj\n\nRegistration will be available on this site soon.

SUMMARY:Performance:Come from Away
DESCRIPTION:*Come from Away* is based on the true story of the time when the isolated community of Gander\, Newfoundland\, played host to the world. What started as an average day in a small town turned into an international sleepover\, when 38 planes\, carrying thousands of people from around the globe\, were diverted to Gander’s airstrip on September 11\, 2001. Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers\, the people of Gander cheered the stranded travelers with music\, an open bar\, and the recognition that we’re all part of a global family.\n\n*Come from Away* has earned global success with 37 award nominations and 13 wins\, most notably Best New Musical at the 2019 Olivier Awards and Outstanding Musical at the 2017 Drama Desk Awards. The show’s global presence resonates with audiences as an uplifting reminder of humanity’s ability to come together.\n\nBook\, Music\, and Lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein\nDirected by Vincent J.

SUMMARY:Performance:Scythian
DESCRIPTION:“When Rock Star Charisma Meets Celtic Dervish Fiddling” –Nashville's Music City Roots\n\nNamed after Ukrainian nomads\, Scythian (sith-ee-yin) plays roots music from Celtic\, Eastern European and Appalachian traditions with thunderous energy\, technical prowess\, and storytelling songwriting\, beckoning crowds into a barn-dance\, rock concert experience. The foursome made up of Alexander Fedoryka (Vocals\, Fiddle\, Mandolin\, Harmonica)\, Danylo Fedoryka (Vocals\, Guitar\, Accordion)\, Ethan Dean (Vocals\, Upright and Electric Bass\, Percussion\, Guitar) and Alex Kuldell (Vocals\, Drums\, Percussion) brings various influences together to create a conglomerate which is technically precise and steeped in various folk traditions. The classically trained Fedoryka brothers grew up on Ukrainian folk music and bluegrass\, while Ethan Dean was raised on the greats of 60’s & 70’s folk-rock. World Champion Scottish Drummer\, Alex Kuldell\, spent 20 years in the US Army Fife and Drum Corps and brings a precision and taste which can only be honed in the highest levels of competition and performance. You have to catch the live show to understand why The Camel City Dispatch said of a MerleFest performance: “[Scythian gives] no quarter in their quest to entertain and bring a joy to their music that gives it an irony-free\, wide open feel of manic possibility. The playing is technically brilliant\, but it is the energy that carries the day.\"
