DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

DESCRIPTION:Visit the Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room to see historical materials that illustrate women’s changing relationship with food\, cooking\, and technology during the heady decade of the 1920s\, sandwiched between WWI and the Great Depression. This exhibit features materials from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive\, as well as select items from the Art\, Architecture\, and Engineering Special Collections and the Transportation History Collection.\n\nAs America rang in a new decade in the 1920s\, cookbook authors and appliance manufacturers stood ready to offer the newly emancipated and forward-thinking American woman a vision for her future\, a vision that would be scientifically  grounded\, speedy enough to make time for leisure as well as housework\, and guaranteed to bring fun to that most humdrum of chores: planning and preparing meals for a family three times a day\, 365 days a year.

DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan.  Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.  \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space.  In patterns that support the artwork’s theme\, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:Artist Tomoyuki Ueno creates individual works and installations where nature appears to be in an endless conversation with form\, one echoing the other\, a repetition. They are a combination of certainty and ephemerality\, as if hinged between living and loss. The specificity of Ueno’s sculptural works reads like poetry. Ueno’s installation offers visitors time away\, for contemplation\, to draw inward\, to come inside\, to ask the question\, “How are art and the everyday intertwined?” Honoring the Buddhist philosophy of impermanence\, one becomes a continuation of the other. The artist intends the space to offer a restorative and meditative experience.\n\nThis exhibition includes artworks created from natural materials foraged by the artist while in artist residency in Ann Arbor.\n\n*The title refers to the opening line of Hōjōki\, written by 13th-century Japanese Buddhist monk Kamo no Chōmei: \"The flow of the river is ceaseless\, and the water is never the same…\"*

DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

Culture facilitates human interaction by providing meaning to lived experience. Accounting for culture in both theories and methods potentially advances the study of health by connecting the macro and micro levels of human experience. Yet\, culture should be understood as dynamic and complex. It fundamentally shapes individuals and simultaneously is shaped by individuals. The importance of systematically attending to culture includes topics of values\, language\, immigration\, and society.\n\nTheories and methods that incorporate culture hold great potential for advancing the understanding of health outcomes and health trajectories in various global contexts.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on various aspects of culture and diverse groups living in the U.S. and across the globe to address the ways in which attending to culture helps clarify and overcome challenges to good health.\n\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan.  Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.  \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space.  In patterns that support the artwork’s theme\, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:Artist Tomoyuki Ueno creates individual works and installations where nature appears to be in an endless conversation with form\, one echoing the other\, a repetition. They are a combination of certainty and ephemerality\, as if hinged between living and loss. The specificity of Ueno’s sculptural works reads like poetry. Ueno’s installation offers visitors time away\, for contemplation\, to draw inward\, to come inside\, to ask the question\, “How are art and the everyday intertwined?” Honoring the Buddhist philosophy of impermanence\, one becomes a continuation of the other. The artist intends the space to offer a restorative and meditative experience.\n\nThis exhibition includes artworks created from natural materials foraged by the artist while in artist residency in Ann Arbor.\n\n*The title refers to the opening line of Hōjōki\, written by 13th-century Japanese Buddhist monk Kamo no Chōmei: \"The flow of the river is ceaseless\, and the water is never the same…\"*

DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/DW8j6\n\nThis talk develops a new representative firm-level dataset for Chinese manufacturing from 1998 to 2019 by combining tax\, registry\, and inspection records and correcting for sampling biases in existing administrative data. Using a CES production framework with firm-specific distortions\, the talk introduces a novel decomposition of aggregate TFP growth into efficient growth and changes in misallocation. The analysis documents a sharp slowdown in Chinese manufacturing productivity growth after 2010\, driven both by weaker incumbent-firm productivity growth and by a diminished contribution from firm turnover and reallocation.  \n\nLoren Brandt is a professor of economics at the University of Toronto specializing in the Chinese economy.  He has published widely on the Chinese economy in leading economic journals including the *American Economic Review*\, *the Quarterly Journal of Economics*\, *Review of Economic Studies*\, *Econometrica and the Journal of Political Economy*\, and been involved in extensive household and enterprise survey work in both China and Vietnam. With Thomas Rawski\, he completed *Policy\, Regulation\, and Innovation in China’s Electricity and Telecom Industries* (Cambridge University Press\, 2019)\, an interdisciplinary effort analyzing the effect of government policy on the power and telecom sectors in China. He was also co-editor and major contributor to *China’s Great Economic Transformation* (Cambridge University Press\, 2008)\, which provides an integrated analysis of China’s unexpected economic boom of the past three decades.  His current research focuses on issues of entrepreneurship and firm dynamics\, industrial policy and innovation\, and economic growth and structural change.

DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan.  Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.  \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space. SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:Artist Tomoyuki Ueno creates individual works and installations where nature appears to be in an endless conversation with form\, one echoing the other\, a repetition. They are a combination of certainty and ephemerality\, as if hinged between living and loss. The specificity of Ueno’s sculptural works reads like poetry. Ueno’s installation offers visitors time away\, for contemplation\, to draw inward\, to come inside\, to ask the question\, “How are art and the everyday intertwined?” Honoring the Buddhist philosophy of impermanence\, one becomes a continuation of the other. The artist intends the space to offer a restorative and meditative experience.\n\nThis exhibition includes artworks created from natural materials foraged by the artist while in artist residency in Ann Arbor.\n\n*The title refers to the opening line of Hōjōki\, written by 13th-century Japanese Buddhist monk Kamo no Chōmei: \"The flow of the river is ceaseless\, and the water is never the same…\"*

DESCRIPTION:\n\nFrom September 2025 through December 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Southeast Michigan-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)\nPhase 3 (September 11 - December 11) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)\nPhase 3 \n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Abhishek Narula (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Nathan Byrne (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtist Statements/Bios\n\nAbhishek Narula\, Compressions \nCompressions is an installation comprised of 416 industrial-grade zip ties\, cinched around the entry pillar of the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference\, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it\, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie\, typically used to hang and bind other material\, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation\, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility\, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell\, to slow down\, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist\, designer\, and educator who works across sculpture\, installation\, sound\, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions\, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry\, exploring themes of labor\, precarity\, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology\, Science Gallery Detroit\, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia\, New Media Caucus (NMC)\, WaveFarm\, The Boulder Public Library\, The Hyde Park Art Center\, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press\, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI)\, International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA)\, among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne\, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image / object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne\, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist’s interest in embodied experience of space\, archival and site responsiveness\, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty\, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist / educator / curator currently based in Detroit\, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects\, he reimagines\, and explores within frameworks such as language\, the passage of time\, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal\, transformative\, and emotive states through materiality\, process\, and placement\, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer’s encounters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lecturer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. DESCRIPTION:A consequential shift is taking place in Central Asian studies today. What started as a slow rejection of the idea that the region benefited from Soviet control has turned into a decentralized\, collective effort to revise the region’s relationship to its colonial identity and to search for indigenous interpretations of the self. A recent Cambridge Element publication co-authored by Erica Marat and Aizada Arystanbek explores the current decolonial disruptions in Central Asia – how the region is being redefined by its inhabitants\, both in discourse and in practice. It captures the main areas of activism in memory studies\, language activism\, art installations\, and transnational solidarity networks. Decolonial discussions are gaining traction\, challenging political elites’ hegemony over national identity formation. Such changes harbor the potential to profoundly alter Russia’s influence in the areas it once controlled. Decolonial disruptions are reshaping how Central Asians think about their past and imagine their future.\n\nDr. Erica Marat is an adjunct professor at the Center for Security Studies\, Georgetown University. Her research focuses on violence\, mobilization and security institutions in Europe\, Central Asia\, India\, and Mexico. She is an author of several books\, including \"Decolonial Disruptions in Central Asia: Discussion\, Practices\, and Networks\" (Cambridge Elements 2026) and \"Transformative Violence: When Routine Cruelty Sparks Historic Mobilization\" (Oxford University Press 2024). SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CMENAS 2026 Fall Colloquium Series | Middle Eastern Christians: The Struggle for Recognition and Rights
DESCRIPTION:A continued presence of Christians in the Middle East is perceived as at risk due to demographic change\, adverse socio-economic conditions\, political instability\, conflict\, and migration. Indeed\, from making up 12.7% of the population in the Middle East in 1900\, the Christian presence has dwindled to 4% by 2020\, with a notable decline in countries with a considerable Christian population but affected by conflict\, such as Iraq and Syria. Indigenous to the region\, Christians are proud of their contributions to the education\, society\, and politics of the Middle East. Yet\, they struggle to translate these forms of soft power into political actions that address legislation\, practices\, and violence that infringe their rights as citizens. Relationships with powerful Western actors campaigning against the persecution of Christians have led to international visibility but also accusations of undermining national unity from political and societal actors in the region. This paper explores the different strategies pursued by Middle East Christians in the region and diaspora to be recognized as Christians and claim their rights as citizens.\n\nFiona McCallum Guiney is Professor and Head of the School of International Relations at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Her research on Middle Eastern Christians focuses on group identity\, the connection between legitimacy and religious leadership\, and group interactions at the state-community and society-community levels\, both in the Middle East and diaspora. Professor Guiney was the Project Leader of the EU funded study ‘Defining and Identifying Middle Eastern Christian Communities in Europe’. She is a former Director of the Institute of Middle East\, Central Asia and Caucasus Studies at the University of St Andrews.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan.  Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.  \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space.  In patterns that support the artwork’s theme\, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.

DESCRIPTION:Lila Kadaj received her MFA from Wayne State University. Her work has been shown at numerous institutions\, including the Detroit Institute of Arts\, the Cranbrook Art Museum\, and the Arab American National Museum.  She spent nearly 27 years teaching art at Detroit Public schools.\n\nArtist statement: “When looking at a beautiful flower.  It’s just itself.  Just there......no .....it does not proclaim its purpose for blooming is to make people happy. It just is. Like standing in front of an easel and painting........just is.......no matter......what proclamations may be concluded to sway the viewer. Same thing goes for fine art.  It’s not about I am a woman....it’s not about I am a first generation Arab American.....it’s not about being a child of trauma....it’s not about a member of my family being gunned down on the street....it’s about being born a painter.....standing in front of my easel and working to create a \"Piece of Fine Art\". Not standing on some soap box and expecting my words to somehow qualify my painting. It’s the painting\, drawing or sculpture that must speak on its own.......on how the artist......via the intellect and muse uses the elements to create something distinct and first rate.   It can be quiet or loud. I see so much very weak work uplifted not for its quality but because it’s in fashion.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:Artist Tomoyuki Ueno creates individual works and installations where nature appears to be in an endless conversation with form\, one echoing the other\, a repetition. They are a combination of certainty and ephemerality\, as if hinged between living and loss. The specificity of Ueno’s sculptural works reads like poetry. Ueno’s installation offers visitors time away\, for contemplation\, to draw inward\, to come inside\, to ask the question\, “How are art and the everyday intertwined?” Honoring the Buddhist philosophy of impermanence\, one becomes a continuation of the other. The artist intends the space to offer a restorative and meditative experience.\n\nThis exhibition includes artworks created from natural materials foraged by the artist while in artist residency in Ann Arbor.\n\n*The title refers to the opening line of Hōjōki\, written by 13th-century Japanese Buddhist monk Kamo no Chōmei: \"The flow of the river is ceaseless\, and the water is never the same…\"*

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SAPAC GROWE: Engendering Respectful Communities Workshops - SY26 - 27
DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 3): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:\n\nFrom September 2025 through December 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Southeast Michigan-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)\nPhase 3 (September 11 - December 11) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)\nPhase 3 \n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Abhishek Narula (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Nathan Byrne (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtist Statements/Bios\n\nAbhishek Narula\, Compressions \nCompressions is an installation comprised of 416 industrial-grade zip ties\, cinched around the entry pillar of the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference\, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it\, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie\, typically used to hang and bind other material\, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation\, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility\, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell\, to slow down\, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist\, designer\, and educator who works across sculpture\, installation\, sound\, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions\, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry\, exploring themes of labor\, precarity\, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology\, Science Gallery Detroit\, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia\, New Media Caucus (NMC)\, WaveFarm\, The Boulder Public Library\, The Hyde Park Art Center\, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press\, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI)\, International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA)\, among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne\, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image / object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne\, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist’s interest in embodied experience of space\, archival and site responsiveness\, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty\, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist / educator / curator currently based in Detroit\, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects\, he reimagines\, and explores within frameworks such as language\, the passage of time\, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal\, transformative\, and emotive states through materiality\, process\, and placement\, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer’s encounters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lecturer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Race and Reckoning in the United States and Germany: Lessons from a Comparative Approach
DESCRIPTION:German atonement for the Holocaust is widely hailed as a paragon of national reckoning\, and African American intellectuals such as Ta-Nehisi Coates have invoked Germany as a useful model in their calls for Americans to confront the legacy of slavery. In tracing the complex process by which Germans have dealt with the Nazi past\, Chin considers how the German case is instructive for Americans seeking to pursue redress\, as well as how Germany’s vaunted memory culture has become fossilized such that it has recently become a stumbling block for a German society struggling with contemporary challenges.\n\nRita Chin is Louise A. Tilly Collegiate Professor of European History at the University of Michigan and served as Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Initiatives at Rackham Graduate School from 2018-25. A historian of post-1945 Europe\, she focuses on issues of immigration\, race\, and cultural diversity. DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan.  Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.  \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space. DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:Artist Tomoyuki Ueno creates individual works and installations where nature appears to be in an endless conversation with form\, one echoing the other\, a repetition. They are a combination of certainty and ephemerality\, as if hinged between living and loss. The specificity of Ueno’s sculptural works reads like poetry. Ueno’s installation offers visitors time away\, for contemplation\, to draw inward\, to come inside\, to ask the question\, “How are art and the everyday intertwined?” Honoring the Buddhist philosophy of impermanence\, one becomes a continuation of the other. The artist intends the space to offer a restorative and meditative experience.\n\nThis exhibition includes artworks created from natural materials foraged by the artist while in artist residency in Ann Arbor.\n\n*The title refers to the opening line of Hōjōki\, written by 13th-century Japanese Buddhist monk Kamo no Chōmei: \"The flow of the river is ceaseless\, and the water is never the same…\"*

DESCRIPTION:\n\nFrom September 2025 through December 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Southeast Michigan-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)\nPhase 3 (September 11 - December 11) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)\nPhase 3 \n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Abhishek Narula (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Nathan Byrne (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtist Statements/Bios\n\nAbhishek Narula\, Compressions \nCompressions is an installation comprised of 416 industrial-grade zip ties\, cinched around the entry pillar of the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference\, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it\, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie\, typically used to hang and bind other material\, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation\, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility\, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell\, to slow down\, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist\, designer\, and educator who works across sculpture\, installation\, sound\, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions\, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry\, exploring themes of labor\, precarity\, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology\, Science Gallery Detroit\, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia\, New Media Caucus (NMC)\, WaveFarm\, The Boulder Public Library\, The Hyde Park Art Center\, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press\, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI)\, International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA)\, among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne\, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image / object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne\, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist’s interest in embodied experience of space\, archival and site responsiveness\, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty\, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist / educator / curator currently based in Detroit\, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects\, he reimagines\, and explores within frameworks such as language\, the passage of time\, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal\, transformative\, and emotive states through materiality\, process\, and placement\, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer’s encounters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lecturer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Role of Young Firms as Employers of Marginalized Workers
DESCRIPTION:Young firms have long been known to be important drivers of job creation\, yet little is known about how and who these firms hire. We provide new evidence that they are disproportionate employers of a largely “unemployable” group: individuals with criminal records. Using administrative data on U.S. workers\, firms\, and the criminal justice system\, we show that young firms struggle to compete for labor against established firms and subsequently hire disproportionately from people with criminal records.  Following a criminal conviction\, a worker becomes 21% more likely to take a job at a young firm. We show this pattern reflects firm-side constraints rather than worker or young firm preferences: young firms conduct fewer background checks and draw from a residual pool of workers that established firms have screened out. Consistent with this mechanism\, sorting is substantially stronger for heavily stigmatized offenses\, weaker in tight labor markets where established firms lower their screening standards\, and weaker under Ban-the-Box policies that restrict established firms’ ability to screen. Using a Bartik instrument\, we show that counties with more jobs at young firms see higher employment rates for workers with criminal records but no change in recidivism\, suggesting these jobs expand labor market access for these workers\, but may not produce the stability needed to deter re-offending.

DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form.
