SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:January 2027 Introduction to Motivational Interviewing by Wolverine Wellness
DESCRIPTION: 1 session on January 9\, 2026In Person: This program is offered yearly for U-M Student Life staff free of charge. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a terrific tool for helping people change behavior. It's especially helpful for medical staff (lifestyle changes and medication adherence)\, therapists/counselors for behavior change to support mental health\, faculty (a way to communicate with students about classwork)\, and academic\, leadership\, and wellness coaches. Its use is being expanded to Student Life advisers\, supervisors\, and more. Learn basic\, foundational skills for MI\, including spirit (Compassion\, Acceptance\, Partnership\, Evocation)\, OARS (open questions\, affirmations\, reflections\, summaries)\, identifying and responding to change talk\, and a brief overview of discord (if time permits). There will be plenty of practice in \"real plays\" (you get to work on your own behavior changes that you are ambivalent about--so bring a couple of behaviors you would like to change). While you won't be an expert at MI when you are done\, you will be able to start the practice\, move forward in your skills\, and know how to improve. Please only register if you can attend all of the training dates\, as each day builds on prior sessions. Through three distinct exhibit sections\, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.\n\nWhile enjoying the exhibit\, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Building Stamina for Existential Listening
DESCRIPTION:In academic spaces\, we are trained for extractive listening to process information and ideas. Relationship-oriented teaching\, advising\, and collaboration\, however\, calls for existential listening to others’ experiences in a way that offers presence\, affirms humanity\, and bears witness without immediately rushing to offer solutions\, refer to external expertise\, intellectualize\, or falsely claim identification and understanding. In this workshop\, we will explore a framework for existential listening and then practice applying it in response to recorded testimonies. The workshop will be interactive and participatory\, but will not ask you to share your own personal stories. Participants will come away with increased stamina for receiving personal\, sensitive\, or uncomfortable disclosures from students or colleagues through concrete practices they can then teach and share with others\, if interested. \n\nDIALOGUE MICHIGAN\nThis event is part of Dialogue Michigan's 2026-2027 faculty and staff workshops.
