SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:January 2027 Introduction to Motivational Interviewing by Wolverine Wellness
DESCRIPTION: 1 session on January 9\, 2026In Person: This program is offered yearly for U-M Student Life staff free of charge. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a terrific tool for helping people change behavior. It's especially helpful for medical staff (lifestyle changes and medication adherence)\, therapists/counselors for behavior change to support mental health\, faculty (a way to communicate with students about classwork)\, and academic\, leadership\, and wellness coaches. Its use is being expanded to Student Life advisers\, supervisors\, and more. Learn basic\, foundational skills for MI\, including spirit (Compassion\, Acceptance\, Partnership\, Evocation)\, OARS (open questions\, affirmations\, reflections\, summaries)\, identifying and responding to change talk\, and a brief overview of discord (if time permits). There will be plenty of practice in \"real plays\" (you get to work on your own behavior changes that you are ambivalent about--so bring a couple of behaviors you would like to change). While you won't be an expert at MI when you are done\, you will be able to start the practice\, move forward in your skills\, and know how to improve. Please only register if you can attend all of the training dates\, as each day builds on prior sessions. SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/399y2\n\nIn this talk Thiranagama will draw from her book *The Monster in Your Path: The Private Life of Caste in India* on the situated histories of caste and enslavement in the South Indian state of Kerala\, most often understood as India's success story. Thiranagama will discuss how new forms of caste disparities\, as well as caste formations\, have become sedimented not in the “public\,” the center of most contemporary work\, but rather in the new kinds of private spaces and private lives that arose after Kerala’s land reforms and communist transformation. Thiranagama suggests new ways to think about contemporary inequalities within historical economies of humiliation and subordination\, as well discussing the dignity projects embarked upon by Kerala’s Dalit communities.\n\nSharika Thiranagama is professor of anthropology at Stanford University. Her research explores violence\, inequality\, and intense political mobilization through a focus on intimacy\, gender and generation. She has been the author of multiple works on Sri Lanka including *In My Mother’s House: Civil War in Sri Lanka* (University of Pennsylvania Press\, 2011). Her most recent book *The Monster in Your Path* (University of California 2026) focuses on Dalit communities in Kerala\, South India examining the gendered inheritance and life of enslavement\, caste and work.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Performance:Faculty Lecture Recital: Steven Whiting\, Lecturer\; Kathryn Votapek\, violin and Christopher Harding\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Steven Whiting\, Kathryn Votapek\, and Christopher Harding will present a lecture concert concerning Beethoven\, to include the violin sonata in C Minor\, Op. 30 #2. This sonata was written at the same time as Beethoven’s Heiligenstadt Testament\, in which he explains his deafness and inability to relate normally with the world. Presented in the 200th anniversary year of Beethoven’s death.\n\nPRESENTER BIOS\n\nProfessor STEVEN WHITING taught at the University of Illinois\, where he took his MM and PhD\, before joining the University of Michigan faculty. Following his undergraduate education\, he studied at Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel\, Germany\, on a Fulbright study grant.\n\nWhiting has published twenty articles and book chapters about Beethoven\, Satie\, French cabaret music\, and E.T.A. Hoffmann\, and has co-edited A. L. Ringer’s *Musik als Geschichte*. His book *Satie the Bohemian: From Cabaret to Concert Hall* (Oxford University Press\, 1999) was recognized as an outstanding academic book by *Choice*.\n\nA former director of the University’s Center for European Studies and associate director of its International Institute\, Whiting served SMTD as associate dean for graduate studies from 2003 to 2014.\n\n--- \n\nA member of the Chester String Quartet for 15 years\, violinist KATHRYN VOTAPEK now maintains an active career as a soloist and guest artist at chamber music festivals throughout the United States\, Canada\, and Europe. She has participated in numerous commissioning projects and premieres and can be heard with the Chester Quartet on the Koch International Classics and New Albion labels. Along with pianist Ralph Votapek and clarinetist Paul Votapek\, she performs as violinist and violist with the Votapek Trio. She has also given numerous duo performances with her husband\, violinist Aaron Berofsky.\n\nVotapek has been on the faculty of the Chautauqua Institution\, the Meadowmount School of Music\, the Interlochen Arts Camp\, the Madeline Island Music Musi Camp\, the Quartet Program\, the Banff International Festival\, the Accademia Musicale Chigiana (Italy)\, the Peter de Grote Summer Academy (Holland)\, and the Music & More Summerfest (Bosnia and Herzegovina)\, as well as performing at the Klosterkammerfest (Germany)\, Speedside Festival (Canada)\, the International Deia Festival (Spain)\, the Garth Newel Festival\, the Fontana Festival\, and with the Chicago Chamber Musicians\, and the Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings.\n\nVotapek is currently on the faculty at the University of Michigan and is the associate concertmaster of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. In prior years she was an associate professor of violin and artist-in-residence at Indiana University – South Bend.\n\nVotapek received her bachelor of music degree at Indiana University and master’s degree from The Juilliard School. Her teachers were Robert Mann\, Franco Gulli\, and Angel Reyes.\n\n---\n\nPianist CHRISTOPHER HARDING maintains an international presence as a noted teacher and performer. He has given solo\, concerto\, and chamber music performances in venues as far flung as the Kennedy Center and Phillips Collection in Washington\, D.C.\, the IBK and Recital Halls of the Seoul Art Center\, Suntory Hall in Tokyo\, the National Theater Concert Hall in Taipei\, the Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary\, and halls and festival appearances in Newfoundland\, Israel\, Italy\, Singapore\, Thailand\, Indonesia\, Romania\, Russia\, and China. His concerto performances have included concerts with the National Symphony and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestras\, the San Angelo and Santa Barbara Symphonies\, and the Tokyo City Philharmonic\, working with such conductors as Andrew Sewell\, Eric Zhou\, Taijiro Iimori\, Gisele Ben-Dor\, Fabio Machetti\, Randall Craig Fleisher\, John DeMain\, Ron Spiegelman\, Daniel Alcott\, and Darryl One\, among others.\n\nMr. Harding’s chamber music and duo collaborations have included internationally renowned artists such as clarinetist Karl Leister\, flautist Andras Adorjan\, and members of the St. Lawrence and Ying String Quartets\, in addition to frequent projects with his distinguished faculty colleagues at the University of Michigan. He has recorded solo and chamber music CDs for the Equilibrium and Brevard Classics labels. He has additionally edited and published critical editions and recordings of works by Claude Debussy (Children's Corner\, Suite Bergamasque\, the Arabesques and shorter works) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Viennese Sonatinas) for the Schirmer Performance Editions published by Hal Leonard.\n\nProfessor Harding has presented master classes and lecture recitals in universities across the United States and Asia\, as well as in Europe\, Israel\, and Canada. He is a Permanent Guest Professor at the Sichuan Conservatory in Chengdu\, China\; he has additionally served as a Fulbright Senior Specialist at the Sichuan Conservatory (2008) and Seoul National University (2011) and Ewha Womans’ University (2023). He has taught masterclasses and performed lecture recitals at all the major universities and schools of music in South Korea\, and throughout China\, Taiwan\, Thailand\, Indonesia and Singapore.\n\nIn addition to serving as Chair of Piano and teaching undergraduate and graduate piano performance and chamber music at the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, Mr. Harding also serves on the faculty of the Sicily International Piano Festival and is a regular guest artist and teacher at the Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival in Tampa\, Florida. \n\nHarding was born of American parents in Munich\, Germany and raised in Northern Virginia. His collegiate studies were with Menahem Pressler and Nelita True. Prior to college\, he worked for 10 years with Milton Kidd at the American University Department of Performing Arts Preparatory Division\, where he was trained in the traditions of Tobias Matthay. He has taken 25 first prizes in national and international competitions and in 1999 was awarded the special \"Mozart Prize\" at the Cleveland International Piano Competition\, given for the best performance of a composition by Mozart.

DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the centennial of the iconic 1926 “Down in Ann Arbor Town” map by exploring the colorful history\, campus traditions\, and detailed artistry that made it possible. Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women\, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. Through three distinct exhibit sections\, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.\n\nWhile enjoying the exhibit\, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. Return your scavenger hunt at the desk for a small prize\, while supplies last.\n\nJoin the curators — Ava Pustulka (’28) and Anna Rohl\, map curator at Clark Library — for a presentation on September 24 (https://myumi.ch/X8y3r)\, where they will share the research that went into creating the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot.\n\nLars Horn is a writer and translator working in literary and experimental non-fiction. Horn’s first book\, *VOICE OF THE FISH: A LYRIC ESSAY*\, won the 2020 Graywolf Nonfiction Prize\, the 2023 Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award\, and was named an Honor Book for the 2023 Stonewall Israel Fishman Nonfiction Book Award as well as an American Booksellers Association Indies Introduce Selection. Footnote Press acquired *VOICE OF THE FISH* for UK release in September 2022. In 2016\, Horn translated the volume Ateliers & Studios for the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. The recipient of the Tin House Without Borders Residency and fellowships from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, the Kenyon Writers Workshops\, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, Horn’s writing has appeared in *Granta\, the Virginia Quarterly Review\, the **Kenyon Review\, Poets & Writers\, The Rumpus\, Literary Hub*\, and elsewhere. \n\nInitially specialising in Phenomenology and Visual Arts scholarship\, he holds MAs from the University of Edinburgh\, the École normale supérieure\, Paris\, and Concordia University\, Montreal as well as an MFA from Randolph College. He lives in New York and teaches at Columbia University.
