SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Becoming Sensitive: The Pedagogy of Smelling and the Environmental Politics of Sensitivity
DESCRIPTION:This talk examines how different social and technological bodies—including e-waste workers\, environmental scientists\, and E-noses—perceive and engage with the pervasive toxic smell in Guiyu\, an e-waste recycling hub in China severely affected by the chemical pollution produced through e-waste processing. The residual smell of crude e-waste recycling practices functions as a sensory modality that traces the environmental violence of the global e-waste economy. It exemplifies what I call \"\"secondhand extraction\"\": a form of extraction within the recycling economy that not only generates but also mediates an alternative\, secondary\, yet equally powerful set of material\, environmental\, and political relations.\n\nI argue that the concept of environmental sensitivity is key to understanding both the lived experience of chemical saturation and China’s model of environmental governance as it takes on distinct meanings across contexts. On the one hand\, it refers to a subjective\, bodily quality—the degree of sensitivity of one’s olfactory faculties. On the other\, it operates as a scientific metric for measuring a community’s vulnerability to environmental hazards\, which in turn shapes the state distribution of land use and ownership. To grasp the complexities of local environmental politics in China\, we must understand how these two layers of sensitivity\, bodily and bureaucratic\, intertwine paradoxically.\n\nTinghao Zhou is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Michigan Society of Fellows and Assistant Professor of Film\, Television\, and Media at the University of Michigan. He received his Ph.D. in Film and Media Studies from the University of California\, Santa Barbara. His research focuses on the intersections of media theory\, environmental humanities and justice\, science and technology studies\, critical infrastructure studies\, and digital cultures in China and beyond. His current book project\, _At the Ends of Media_\, explores the material and political impacts of the global media economy on local communities\, labor conditions\, and ecologies. He currently serves as Associate and Review Editor of _Media+Environment_.

Through three distinct exhibit sections\, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.\n\nWhile enjoying the exhibit\, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. Horn’s first book\, *VOICE OF THE FISH: A LYRIC ESSAY*\, won the 2020 Graywolf Nonfiction Prize\, the 2023 Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award\, and was named an Honor Book for the 2023 Stonewall Israel Fishman Nonfiction Book Award as well as an American Booksellers Association Indies Introduce Selection. Footnote Press acquired *VOICE OF THE FISH* for UK release in September 2022. In 2016\, Horn translated the volume Ateliers & Studios for the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. The recipient of the Tin House Without Borders Residency and fellowships from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, the Kenyon Writers Workshops\, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, Horn’s writing has appeared in *Granta\, the Virginia Quarterly Review\, the **Kenyon Review\, Poets & Writers\, The Rumpus\, Literary Hub*\, and elsewhere. \n\nInitially specialising in Phenomenology and Visual Arts scholarship\, he holds MAs from the University of Edinburgh\, the École normale supérieure\, Paris\, and Concordia University\, Montreal as well as an MFA from Randolph College. SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:Created by the MORE Committee\, these workshops are designed to strengthen the student–faculty mentoring relationship through the development of shared expectations\, sharing mentoring best practices\, and understanding of mentoring across differences.\n\nThe Getting Your Mentoring Relationship Off to a Good Start Workshop is attended jointly by faculty mentors and their graduate student mentees. Mentors and mentees first participate in separate parallel sessions\, where they reflect on their own goals\, working styles\, and approaches to common challenges. Afterwards\, each student–faculty pair collaborates to create a written mentoring plan that outlines key elements such as needs\, objectives\, and mutual expectations. Among Rackham doctoral students who have drafted mentoring plans\, 83 percent report finding them helpful. Horn’s first book\, *VOICE OF THE FISH: A LYRIC ESSAY*\, won the 2020 Graywolf Nonfiction Prize\, the 2023 Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award\, and was named an Honor Book for the 2023 Stonewall Israel Fishman Nonfiction Book Award as well as an American Booksellers Association Indies Introduce Selection. Footnote Press acquired *VOICE OF THE FISH* for UK release in September 2022. In 2016\, Horn translated the volume Ateliers & Studios for the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. The recipient of the Tin House Without Borders Residency and fellowships from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, the Kenyon Writers Workshops\, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, Horn’s writing has appeared in *Granta\, the Virginia Quarterly Review\, the Kenyon Review\, Poets & Writers\, The Rumpus\, Literary Hub*\, and elsewhere.\n\nInitially specialising in Phenomenology and Visual Arts scholarship\, he holds MAs from the University of Edinburgh\, the École normale supérieure\, Paris\, and Concordia University\, Montreal as well as an MFA from Randolph College.
