SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:Created by the MORE Committee\, these workshops are designed to strengthen the student–faculty mentoring relationship through the development of shared expectations\, sharing mentoring best practices\, and understanding of mentoring across differences.\n\nThe Getting Your Mentoring Relationship Off to a Good Start Workshop is attended jointly by faculty mentors and their graduate student mentees. Mentors and mentees first participate in separate parallel sessions\, where they reflect on their own goals\, working styles\, and approaches to common challenges. Afterwards\, each student–faculty pair collaborates to create a written mentoring plan that outlines key elements such as needs\, objectives\, and mutual expectations. Among Rackham doctoral students who have drafted mentoring plans\, 83 percent report finding them helpful. Mentoring pairs are encouraged to consider attending the optional one-on-one discussion time at the end of the workshop\, where they have dedicated time to work together on developing the mentoring plan.\n\nSeparate registration for faculty is available at: https://myumi.ch/61V6J.

Horn’s first book\, *VOICE OF THE FISH: A LYRIC ESSAY*\, won the 2020 Graywolf Nonfiction Prize\, the 2023 Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award\, and was named an Honor Book for the 2023 Stonewall Israel Fishman Nonfiction Book Award as well as an American Booksellers Association Indies Introduce Selection. Footnote Press acquired *VOICE OF THE FISH* for UK release in September 2022. In 2016\, Horn translated the volume Ateliers & Studios for the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. The recipient of the Tin House Without Borders Residency and fellowships from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, the Kenyon Writers Workshops\, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, Horn’s writing has appeared in *Granta\, the Virginia Quarterly Review\, the Kenyon Review\, Poets & Writers\, The Rumpus\, Literary Hub*\, and elsewhere.\n\nInitially specialising in Phenomenology and Visual Arts scholarship\, he holds MAs from the University of Edinburgh\, the École normale supérieure\, Paris\, and Concordia University\, Montreal as well as an MFA from Randolph College. SUMMARY:Performance:Baroque Chamber Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan’s Baroque Chamber Orchestra studies and performs repertoire from the late Renaissance\, Baroque\, and the early Classical periods. While directed by faculty members Aaron Berofsky\, baroque violin\, and Joseph Gascho\, harpsichord/organ\, many performances are led by the students themselves. Using period instruments and replicas from the university’s growing Stearns Collection\, the musicians gain vital hands-on experience and learn about the history and context of early music and performance practice.

DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan Dance Company presents a broad spectrum of contemporary dance practices performed by students in the Department of Dance. This all-ages concert will feature the work of four choreographers: Professor Shannon Gillen\, founder and artistic director of dance company VIM VIGOR\; Professor Amy West\, whose dance work *Rock ’n Roll Ballet* will feature an original score by Professor Erik Santos and Jason Magee\; guest artist Kim Jones\, whose *Adorations Reimagined* will reimagine the 1975 work by Martha Graham\; and guest artist Kia Smith\, artistic director of South Chicago Dance Theatre.\n\nArtistic Direction by Jillian Hopper\n
