SUMMARY:Performance:Symphony Band
DESCRIPTION:As we begin the new year\, the University of Michigan Symphony Band presents a concert of conflict and resolution\, hardship and resilience. Anchored by cornerstones of the wind repertoire including Gustav Mahler's gorgeous song \"Un Mitternacht\" and Karel Husa's monumental tribute to his homeland in *Music for Prague 1968*\, this concert places these masterworks side by side with dramatic new works for symphonic band by Jennifer Jolley and U-M graduate student Matthew Osterholzer. SUMMARY:Performance:Baroque Chamber Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan’s Baroque Chamber Orchestra studies and performs repertoire from the late Renaissance\, Baroque\, and the early Classical periods. While directed by faculty members Aaron Berofsky\, baroque violin\, and Joseph Gascho\, harpsichord/organ\, many performances are led by the students themselves. Using period instruments and replicas from the university’s growing Stearns Collection\, the musicians gain vital hands-on experience and learn about the history and context of early music and performance practice.
