SUMMARY:Performance:The Elixir of Love (L'Elisir d'Amore)
DESCRIPTION:The handsome young peasant Nemorino is hopelessly in love with Adina\, but she barely gives him a glance. In fact\, she seems enamored with the head of the local garrison\, Sgt. Belcore\, even going so far as to promise to marry him immediately. A desperate Nemorino resorts to “magic\,” seeking help from Dr. Dulcamara\, a charming con man\, who guarantees him that one drink of a mysterious elixir will make Adina fall in love with him within 24 hours. In order to get the elixir (actually just an ordinary Bordeaux) to work faster and thereby prevent Adina’s impending marriage\, Nemorino downs the entire bottle in one gulp. With charming twists and turns\, love blossoms in all the right places.\n\nOne of the most popular works of the opera repertoire\, *The Elixir of Love* has been an audience favorite since its debut in 1832. Composed by Donizetti in just two weeks\, the opera skillfully balances comedy with poignancy and simplicity with detailed invention in a fresh\, exhilarating example of bel canto. The score is filled with delightful arias\, duets\, and ensembles\, including two hauntingly beautiful tenor arias for Nemorino\, “Una furtiva lagrima” and “Quanto è bella.” The 19th-century Italian equivalent of a Broadway musical\, *The Elixir of Love* is a delightful tale about the innocence of love that is sure to make audiences smile.\n\nSung in Italian with Eng. Supertitles\nWith the University Philharmonia Orchestra\n\nComposed by Gaetano Donizetti\nLibretto by Felice Romani\nConducted by Kirk Severtson\nDirected by Chía Patiño\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration. \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. Art was an expression of freedom\, individuality\, and personalized creativity\, without which it ceased to be art.”\n— Galina Lembersky\, daughter\n\nExhibit curated by Yelena Lembersky\, granddaughter of Felix Lembersky\, and Geneviève Zubrzycki\, WCEE Director.\n\nWorks on loan from the private collection of Yelena Lembersky.\n\nContact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Performance:Murakami by the Sea: An original work inspired by the work of Haruki Murakami
DESCRIPTION:*Murakami by the Sea* is a full-length devised work inspired by novels and short stories by Haruki Murakami (the award-winning Japanese writer of *Kafka on the Shore*\, among many others). Placed within a constantly evolving environment of cardboard and broken tires\, the production bridges the gap between the genres of visual art\, music\, theatre\, and movement. The created world and soundscape of tangible memories\, innocent gestures\, poignant observations\, and emotional interactions wash over the audience and take them to the serenity at the bottom of the ocean. \n\nDevised & Directed by Tzveta Kassabova with the cast\, shaped by the dramaturg Teresa Kovacs.\n

Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
