Learner-centered Interactions with Artificial Intelligence: Structure for Equity

Part of CRLT's Equity-focused Teaching @ Michigan Series
In this interactive synchronous session, participants will reflect on how Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools might impact whether their current or future students have equal access to learning and feel valued and supported in classes. Since the public release of ChatGPT, some have worried that GenAI may reinforce existing inequities, while others have predicted that the tools will be used to expand access and make classrooms more inclusive. Now that GenAI tools are available to all U-M students, staff, and faculty, many instructors recognized the importance of introducing GenAI as a topic of conversation with their students, whether their goal is to encourage or discourage its use. Through guided reflection and small-group discussion activities, participants in this workshop will explore how thoughtfully structuring students’ interactions with the topic of GenAI from a learner-centered perspective can help promote equity in a range of teaching contexts.
