Malaysia's 13th Election: Policies, Institutions, and Social Change
This seminar will provide an overview of the current state of Malaysia, based on an assessment of the results of the 13th Elections, held on 5 May 2013. The results of this election offer vital insights into questions about the institutional structure of political parties and forms of mobilization and governance as well as the outcomes of key policies introduced to address socioeconomic inequities and drive economic growth. The lessons of this election will be analysed historically, from the period 1990 to 2013, from the lens of two key issues: (a) the significance of coalition politics; and (b) how the outcomes of public policies have shaped voting trends.
