Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at U-M

Speaker: Richard C. Adelman, Ph.d. Emeritus Professor of Biological Chemistry, U-M

Opera and politics attract one another. Some composers and producers utilize political events to shape operas. on the other hand, recollection of some memorable operatic moments enriches political commentary by news and entertainment media in contemporary and future times. each of these scenarios evokes a range of dramatic emotions from humor to tragedy and outrage. This presentation uses selected scenes from Richard Wagner’s “Ring Cycle” and John Adams’s “The Death of Klinghoffer” to provide insight into the ways that politics and opera shape one another and to contemplate specific roles of humor and tragedy within the context of those interactions.
