Peripheral nerves and musculoskeletal function: Impact on mobility outcomes in older adults

Guest Speaker, Elsa S. Strotmeyer, Ph.D., M.P.H.

Impairments in sensory and motor peripheral nerve function are common in older adults, but are often underappreciated. These impairments are related to treatable risk factors, such as diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency and peripheral vascular disease. Importantly, poor peripheral nerve function is associated with lower bone mineral density, lower muscle function and physical performance, more falls and fall injuries, and increased disability outcomes. These relationships exist not only for clinical neuropathy, but for subtle age-related declines in the peripheral nerves, which are prevalent and exist subclinically. This presentation develops an emerging paradigm of muscle and bone aging that recognizes the critical role of neural aspects in explaining and ultimately preventing the loss of physical function. - See more at: http://www.sph.umich.edu/iscr/news_events/event.cfm?ID=3204#sthash.kDpuHeuP.dpuf
