Circumcision: Medical Procedure or Religious Ritual?--OLLI Study Group (50+)

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at U-M

Class meets Wednesdays, November 6 - November 20.
Dr. Emanuel Tanay will give an overview of the religious origin of the male circumcision and review the medical literature on this controversial subject. Female circumcision as practiced in Islamic countries, particularly in Africa, will be briefly discussed. Circumcision played a significant role during the Holocaust, as a reliable identifier of male Jews. Dr. Tanay has had some experiences of this nature during his own struggle for survival in the Holocaust.
