Author's Forum Presents: Making Callaloo in Detroit: A Conversation with Lolita Hernandez and Laura Thomas
Author Lolita Hernandez reads from her new collection of stories, Making Callaloo in Detroit, and is then joined in conversation by Laura Thomas.
The daughter of parents from Trinidad and Tobago and St. Vincent, Lolita Hernandez gained a unique perspective on growing up in Detroit. In Making Callaloo in Detroit she weaves her memories of food, language, music, and family into twelve stories of outsiders looking at a strange world, wondering how to fit in, and making it through in their own way.
Lolita Hernandez, born and raised in Detroit, is also the author of Autopsy of an Engine and Other Stories from the Cadillac Plant, which won a 2005 PEN Beyond Margins Award. After more than 33 years as a UAW member at General Motors, she now teaches in the Creative Writing Department of the U-M Residential College.
Laura Thomas heads the undergraduate creative writing program at the U-M Residential College. Her short fiction has appeared in a number of journals, including The Cimarron Review and Midwestern Gothic. She is a Pushcart Prize nominee and received an honorable mention in the 2009 Nimrod Literary Awards. She is a contributor to Ghost Writers: Us Haunting Them.
