The son of a Warren, Ohio, steelworker, Jerry Douglas started out playing his instrument of choice, the Dobro, in local bars. Since then he has developed a unique idiom that seems wedded to that uniquely American instrument. His music is rooted in bluegrass, but he has also deployed jazz, the raw emotion and twang of country music, the sober ragas of Indian music, Native American modal melodies, the rich structures of classical music, the sunny harmonies of Hawaiian music, note-packed Celtic tunes, woebegone New Orleans funeral marches, gospel, and the blues. In a word (or three): just about everything! From his early bluegrass recordings, through work with Allison Krauss that did much to define her sound, to the dizzying virtuosity and variety of his new album "Traveler," there has been a consistent artistic development in Jerry Douglas's music, and by now he's a modern American master. Of the genre-spanning "Traveler," Jerry says, "I found myself ready to step completely out of my comfort zone." Jerry appears solo at this show.
