The Decline of the Ottoman Empire
The Balfour Declaration and the Arab Revolt of 1916
World War I enabled Zionists to press for a Jewish homeland in Palestine under British protection and Arabs under Emir Hussein to seek British support for their revolt against the Ottomans. We will discuss three recent books on the subject: (1)”The Balfour Declaration: Origins of the Arab-Israeli Conflict” by Jonathan Schneer, (2)”Lawrence in Arabia: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly and The Making of the Middle East” by Scott Anderson and (3)”The War That Ended Peace” by Margaret MacMillan. Reading the books in advance is helpful, but not required. Handouts about principal characters and maps will be mailed to participants in advance.
This study group for adults 50+ meets on Mondays, October 19 - November 30.
