Indonesia Etc., Exploring an Improbable Nation
Learn about this unique democracy
This study group will read the title book by Elizabeth Pisani about life in an improbable nation of more than 6,000 islands and 260 million people who speak hundreds of languages.
Indonesia is full of idiosyncrasies, corruption and inequality. Yet it is a democracy that continues to survive, while fighting radical Islam. She takes us on a tour, giving us a vivid sense of Indonesian life from small villages – where she visited people in bamboo huts, met child brides and witnessed jousting on horseback – to large cities, where she got to know people in many walks of life, such as priests, teachers, soldiers and politicians. Please read to page 28 for the first class.
This study group for adults 50+ meets on Mondays, September 21 - October 26.
Instructor: Gerry Lapidus
