Sci-fi Machine Translation: Even the Enterprise computer can’t understand all languages.

Join us on Monday for a screening of one of the most linguistically-interesting episodes of Star Trek, “Darmok,” in which the crew make contact with an alien species whose language confuses even the only-in-sci-fi machine translation system of the Starship Enterprise.  The screening will be followed by a discussion of the limits of translation, both by machines and by humans.  Come prepared to talk about idioms in other languages that sound funny to English ears, untranslatable words that English could really stand to borrow, and stories from that time you accidentally said, in French, “I’m pregnant” when you meant “I’m full.”
