NPR called Brooklyn-based San Fermin's 2013 debut album "a nearly hourlong feast of chamber pop storytelling." Since then, the band has grown, not only artistically but in terms of sheer size: they're an eight-piece touring group, with former Ann Arborite Charlene Kaye as lead vocalist. The band reflects the vision of classically trained composer and leader Ellis Ludwig-Leone, who found himself touring with a band and, he says, "ripped these holes in the middle of ... existing songs and added some new ones." The result was a new album, "Jackrabbit," that's earning raves for its combination complicated compositional maneuvers, grandiose pop eruptions, and gritty rock-band freedom. At once lived-in and sophisticated, the big, ambitious Baroque pop music of San Fermin feels a lot like real life—charmed, challenging, and in the end compulsory.
