While individual institutions must play leading roles in advancing equity, diversity and inclusion on their campuses, the responsibility to defend the underlying principles associated with these commitments is borne across a very broadly dispersed system of colleges, universities, associations and interest groups. This is a shared, long term and perhaps historic mission waged in the context of increasingly contested environments. A panel of presidents representing several institutional segments in U.S. higher education will reflect on the particular roles their institutions play, the importance of recognizing interdependence across institutional types, and the need for a more compelling way of articulating higher education's unified commitment to preparing individuals for a dynamic, increasingly diverse society. This public event will be an opportunity to place U-M's diversity efforts into the context of higher education's broader, long term commitment to advance equity, diversity and inclusion.
