We have arranged with three panelists who will present and give advice about working for non-academic entities—for the government, for NGOs, for foundations, educational institutions, businesses. They will focused their advice on how to make the leap from doctoral training to these professional fields; they will also pay particular attention to the ways that writing and humanities-based skills come into play in these jobs. There will be substantial time for Q&A.

The Colloquium will be held in 3222 Angell Hall on Thursday, December 3 from 3-5 PM. If your schedule on Thursday afternoon prevents you from arriving at 3 or from staying the whole time, feel free to come for whatever portion of the session you can.

There will be individual consults available by request from 3271 Angell on Friday December 4 from 10 AM - 12 PM.

Panel Participants Include:

Joseph Cialdella (PhD in American Culture) is a Program Manager for the Michigan Humanities council. He is responsible for overseeing the Heritage Grants Program, which awards funding to cultural organizations across Michigan for projects that use humanities approaches to explore race and ethnicity through exhibits, public programs, oral histories, collections, and community dialogues.

Edie Disler (PhD in Linguistics) is the Director of External Relations for the Texas Veterans Commission. Before joining the Texas Veterans Commission she ran her own consulting firm, InterActional Strategies, LLC, which specialized in strategic communication, crisis communication, cross-cultural communication, speechwriting, and business writing, with special expertise in communications in higher education. She has also served as an Associate Professor of English at the Air Force Academy and as the speech writer for the Secretary of the Air Force and the Chief of Staff of the Air Force.

John Ramsburgh (PhD in English) is a regional director of development for the University of Michigan. He also serves on the Ann Arbor Greenbelt Advisory Commission (GAC). He was appointed by the city council to replace Dan Ezekiel in an at-large position for a term from July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2016. In March 2014, Ramsburgh joined the board of A2Ethics, a local nonprofit.
