Why Reading Groups Matter
How to Organize and Run Them
Reading groups are more urgently needed than ever. The rise of the Internet has led to a decrease in reading as well as a diminished ability to think deeply and creatively. Sociologists have also documented the weakening of American social ties. This presentation will argue that reading groups can help counter these disturbing trends. It will discuss the benefits of a well-run group, offer guidelines for setting one up, and suggest books likely to generate productive discussions. Chris Siehl has designed and taught college-level courses on group dynamics and interviewing. An avid reader, he has led groups since 1998. This study group is for adults 50+.
