Jackson Historic Prison Tour
Come and See the "Other" Big House
In conjunction with Osher Life Long Learning Institute’s (OLLI) Lecture Series, “Violence: Its Roots and Reasons,” OLLI and Jackson Journeys offer a historically-focused, highly interactive, escorted tour of one of the two largest walled prisons in the world. The State Prison of Southern Michigan has been in continuous operation since it housed its first inmate in 1839. The tour for those over 50 is filled with the fascinating, intertwined history of the eras of the “Big House” (not the one they play football in), the Industrial Revolution, Prohibition and the Detroit Riots; it also includes arts, culture and architectural adventure. Highlights include the Historic Michigan Theater of Jackson, the Cellblock Seven Prison Museum, and the Armory, Michigan’s first prison.
This trip lasts from 9:00 a.m. to approximately 6:00 p.m. and includes motor coach transportation from and returning to Ann Arbor and a talk by Kati Rezmierski, Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Jackson County during lunch at Steve’s Ranch Restaurant. Pre-registration required.
