Martin Luther King Jr. Day Activities at the Detroit Center
Visit the University of Michigan Detroit Center this Martin Luther King Jr. Day and be part of the inspiring and educational events beginning at 10 a.m., Monday, January 18 with free admission and parking for all attendees.
A simulcast of the 30th Annual Martin Luther King Day Symposium keynote address, presented by Nontombi Naomi Tutu, will take place in the Ann Arbor Room of the Detroit Center from 10 – 11:30 a.m. To assist the Detroit Center in providing the best guest experience possible, please RSVP for this free event.
Naomi Tutu is a human rights activist and the daughter of the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Born in Krugersdorp, South Africa, she received an international education, where at the age 6, she was sent from her home in Soweto to the Waterford KaMhlaba School 1,000 miles away in Mbabane, Swaziland. This school was one of eleven international United World Colleges, an educational movement that brings together students from all over the world based on merit, regardless of financial status. Naomi also received portions of her earliest education in England, where her father spent much of his early career. Naomi Tutu has spent her adult life advocating for the rights of women and people of color. As an expert on gender and race relations, her message on human rights has reached audiences across the world.
Following the keynote, a complimentary lunch will precede the Detroit Center’s afternoon panel discussion.
Built around the University-wide theme, “who will be next?” this year’s panel discussion, "Leading for Today and Tomorrow,” focuses on the development of young leaders with representatives from the public, private and religious sectors. The panel will share their leadership philosophies and methodologies in developing the next generation of leaders.
Moderated by Kerin Borland, panelists for this event include:

- Sarida Scott-Montgomery, Executive Director, Communications Development Advocates of Detroit
