The cochlear implant is an engineering marvel that has changed the lives of nearly 500,000 deaf and hard-of-hearing adults and children worldwide. The device and patient outcomes have steadily improved over the last 30 years. Recently, there have been some dramatic advances in technology that can profoundly affect the world of hearing impairment. In this talk, Dr. Arts will discuss the cochlear implant and how it works, and review the exciting new developments.

Dr. Arts is Medical Director of the UM Cochlear Implant Program, Director of the UM Neurotology Fellowship Training Program, and Director of the Children’s Ear and
Hearing Center of Michigan. Initially a mechanical engineer, he learned in medical school about the newly-developed cochlear implant, an electronic device placed in the inner ear to enhance the hearing of the severely hearing-impaired.

This is the second in a six-lecture series. The subject is Biomedical Breakthroughs: The Future is Here. The next lecture will be March 10, entitled CAN WE REALLY CURE CANCER?
