Becoming a Better Storyteller: Uncovering Common Truths and Sharing Them

ABOUT JIMMIE: Jimmie Briggs is an award winning journalist, lecturer, and advocate who has examined youth violence and trauma; sexual and gender-based violence against women and girls; as well as the impact of war-affected children around the world. His seminal 2005 book, “Innocents Lost: When Child Soldiers Go to War” took readers into the lives of child soldiers in central Africa, the Near East, Asia, and South America. He is also the co-founder of the Man Up Campaign, a global initiative that aims to educate youth on how to stop violence again women and girls in their local communities. Based on his work, Briggs was selected the winner of the 2010 GQ Magazine, “Better Men, Better World" search. Jimmie was also recently named an honorary commissioner for New York City’s Gender Equity Commission by Major Bill DeBlasio, and continues to consult on matters of racial inequity and justice.
WORKSHOP PURPOSE: Jimmie will share his experiences as a writer and journalist and then lead us to story development and presentation.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: In an intimate workshop environment, attendees will be led in discussion to identify the critical components of successful storytelling in large and small-group situations. Time will be devoted to opportunities for final presentations at the end of each program.
