Chinese painter Xu Weixin's work reflects a deep interest in the stories and experiences of ordinary people. Their portraits are given pride of place alongside those of important leaders in UMMA's exhibition Xu Weixin: Monumental Portraits. Join Xiaobing Tang, Helmut F. Stern Professor Modern Chinese Studies and Comparative Literature, for an exploration of the exhibition.
Dr. Tang's interests include Chinese visual culture and artistic practices as they relate to understanding the complexity of Chinese society. He is the author of several books, including the recent Visual Culture in Contemporary China: Paradigms and Shifts (Cambridge University Press, 2015). In 2011, he curated Multiple Impressions: Contemporary Chinese Woodblock Prints for UMMA.
