2016 Stamps Commencement Ceremony
The 2016 Stamps Commencement celebration will be held on April 30, 2016 at 2 pm at the North Campus Research Complex.
Joel Jacobs (BFA and BSE, 1997) will be the featured speaker at this year’s Stamps School commencement event.
About Joel Jacobs
Joel is a product designer who still can’t decide whether to call himself a designer or an engineer. Despite this ambiguity he has managed to piece together an exciting career spanning consumer electronics, children’s toys, enterprise products, and medical devices.
After graduating from the University of Michigan with joint degrees in Industrial Design and Mechanical Engineering, Joel joined Lunar Design in San Francisco where he dabbled in a variety of industries and technologies. He later moved on to Cranium, Inc., leading the technical development of their nascent toy business.
Joel ultimately landed at Microsoft’s Pioneer Studios, a small innovation team charged with inventing new products and experiences in the consumer electronics space. He currently leads the Product Design team within Microsoft’s Industrial Design Studio, where he works on Xbox consoles and accessories, HoloLens, and numerous incubation programs.
When he’s not at work Joel usually can be spotted somewhere outdoors in the greater Seattle area with his wife, Reena, and their two daughters. And hopefully a dog in the near future.
Central Campus Spring Commencement
At the University of Michigan, graduates celebrate their achievements at individual school commencement ceremonies and at a central school-wide ceremony at Michigan Stadium, happening this spring on Saturday, April 30 at 10 am (prior to the Stamps School commencement at 2 pm at NCRC). This festive, campus-wide event is a chance to gather with peers from across the university; at this large, spirited ceremony, graduates do not walk across the stage, but are recognized in their school or college groups. This spring, Stamps alumna Michele Oka Doner (B.S. Des. 1966, MFA 1968) has been recommended for honorary Doctor of Arts at Spring Commencement. Michele Oka Doner is known for her pioneering and multidisciplinary contributions to visual culture.
