Born in Detroit, Marion Hayden is one of the nation’s finest proponents of the acoustic bass. Hayden was mentored by master trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, began performing at the age of 15, and now is on faculty in the Department of Jazz Studies at U-M. For this concert, Hayden presents original compositions and selected repertoire in response to "I Sell the Shadow to Support the Substance," a quote from former slave, abolitionist and womanist Sojourner Truth. Sojourner Truth sold photographs of herself to raise funds for her abolitionist activities. Hayden will present musical reflections on the themes of self-identity, self-imagery and womanhood.
