Ornament as a Diagnostic: Pieter Bruegel against Notions of the Vernacular and Classicism
Matthew Kavaler, University of Toronto / The Premodern Colloquium
Matt Kavaler is Professor of Art History at the University of Toronto and Director of the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies at Victoria College in the University of Toronto. A specialist in northern European art of the early modern period, he is the author of Pieter Bruegel: Parables of Order and Enterprise (Cambridge 1999) and of Renaissance Gothic: Architecture and the Arts in Northern Europe 1470-1540 (Yale 2012), as well as various essays on ornament and periodization in Late Gothic architecture. The topics of his current research includes Netherlandish sculpture of the sixteenth century.
