Stones, Spears, and Bacterial Social Aggression at its Worst
Harry L.T. Mobley, Frederick G. Novy Distinguished University Professor
Please join us for a lecture by Distinguished University Professor Harry L.T. Mobley.
Lecture Abstract:
Proteus mirabilis, a bacterium named for Homer’s Greek god who changed shape to avoid capture, alternates shape between short adherent cells and elongated swarming forms. The bacterium is most often associated with painful kidney stones produced by the enzyme urease, but also attacks and kills competing bacteria using toxin-loaded spears.
