New information technologies are transforming life in cities across Michigan and around the world. Citizens rely on a variety of mobile apps and explore their community through virtual reality interfaces, communities are formed and supported through a variety of information tools, and city managers and planners have access to an expanding array of technology solutions and data sets. As a result of this dizzying expansion of innovation, cities are only just beginning to learn how to use these tools to tackle urban problems, improve quality of life, and create dynamic places.

The #micities conference is a discussion on how information technology is impacting community engagement, planning, and citizenship in Michigan cities and beyond. The conference will include a keynote address, lightning talks, and break-out sessions highlighting civic technology initiatives across Michigan, including projects from cities partnering with Citizen Interaction Design program at the UM School of Information. This one-day conference is aimed at students, faculty, practitioners, and citizens interested in applying new information tools and methods in their communities.
