Not An Alternative: Tactics for the Anthropocene
Not An Alternative is a NY-based collective that works at the intersection of art, activism, and critical theory. Its mission is to affect popular understandings of histories, symbols, and institutions through the occupation and redeployment of popular vernacular, semiotics, and memes. Named in The New York Times and ArtNet’s “Best in Art in 2015” round-ups, the group’s work has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally. Their latest project, The Natural History Museum, is a mobile and pop-up museum that highlights the socio-political forces that shape nature, yet are excluded from traditional natural history museums.
Presenting for the group is co-founder Beka Economopoulos. Beka has two decades of experience working within the advocacy and sustainability sectors as the Director of Online Organizing at Greenpeace and the Director of Strategy at Fission Strategy, where clients included United Nations Environment Programme and Global Climate Change Alliance.
Supported by the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History and the University of Michigan Museum Studies Program.
