Poets in English use rhythm and meter to express thought and feeling. After a brief introduction, participants will read and hear examples of different verse forms: sonnets, couplets, alliterative verse, blank verse, free verse and poems in unusual meters and stanzas. Examples will be drawn from very early English poetry up to the 20th century. We'll consider how poetry works as narrative, as a vehicle for experience and as self-expression. We'll use a short anthology that the instructor will make available to the class. James McIntosh is Professor Emeritus of English and American Culture. This class for adults over 50 meets Mondays through December 5th. There will be no class on Oct 17. The December 5th class will be held at Turner Senior Resource Center, 2401 Plymouth Road.
