Political commentator E.J. Dionne views contemporary American conservatism as a betrayal of its voters and a root cause of the turbulence in the Republican party today. He argues that conservatives promise to abolish big government and restore traditional values, yet they repeatedly disappoint. This has created an untenable situation in which groups with different ideals - libertarians, moralists and nativists - are vying for control.
