The Secret Game
WWII Interracial Basketball Game
Join UM professor and 2016 PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing recipient Scott Ellsworth for the behind-the-scenes story of what the New York Post called "a brave moment in basketball, forgotten to history, which resonates far beyond the court." During World War II, two college basketball teams in the deeply segregated South- one black and one white--played a secret game against each other in a locked gymnasium. This long hushed-up contest was a daring affront to Jim Crow and marked an important step along the road to civil rights. This class is for adults over 50.
