The U-M Detroit Student Service Fusion Workshop I
Do you engage in the city of Detroit through your personal or student organizational initiatives? The University of Michigan Detroit Center and a coalition of civic/community engagement specialists and programs joined together to create The U-M Detroit Student Service Fusion Workshops. This three-part series of interactive workshops will prepare University of Michigan students wanting to learn/share best practices and resources for civic, cultural, service and social justice activities in Detroit.

Workshop Objectives Will Include:
1. Enter and exit communities.
2. Build upon community strengths.
3. Recognize community assets/needs.
4. Understand Detroit’s racial history and culture (strengths and beauty), community disparities, structural racism and marginalization (root causes).
5. Provide a vehicle to voice student (participant) expectations concerning their engagement with Detroit citizens, organizations, and its neighborhoods.
Workshop I will cover the history and current context of the city’s sociopolitical state, including Detroit’s role in the region/nation and its relationship with the University. The session also affords students with the opportunities to share best practices and learn about resources useful in realizing or enhancing engagement initiatives.
