STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Our main initiative is to improve education in these areas, especially targeting lower socioeconomic areas of Southeast Michigan. Each semester, we hold an all day STEM event for high school students from school districts in the surrounding area. This event is an opportunity for us to teach the lesson plans and activities that we have been developing all semester as well as to expose high school students to the diversity of opportunities in STEM fields. Students are brought to campus during this event via transportation that the club arranges. Once here, the students are brought to the USB (Undergraduate Science Building). STEM club members then deliver 40 min to hour long interactive, hands-on instructional lessons in Science, Technology, Math, or Engineering related fields. These lessons are screened ahead of time to ensure that they are engaging, fun, and collaborative. They are designed to follow in the footsteps of Benjamin Franklin who said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn."In the past we have had lessons ranging from interactive science lessons with DNA, to math related mysteries, designing and customizing computer games through coding, and car prototypes for engineering exercises. Join us this semester and showcase your passion for your major by demonstrating all the cool activities and work such a job entails.
