CANCELED Stradella’s La Susanna
In accordance with the Unversity-wide measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, this performance has been canceled.
The Voice Department in partnership with the Early Music Ensemble, under the direction of Prof. Joseph Gascho, presents Alessandro Stradella’s two-part oratorio La Susanna. Based on an excerpt from the Book of Daniel, La Susanna tells the story of two elderly men who, spying on the virtuous young Susanna bathing naked in her garden, lust after her and pursue her. Rejected by Susanna, in their spite, they publicly accuse her of adultery, punishable by death. Exploring themes of sexual assault, misogyny, and entitlement, this fully-staged opera features a stand-out cast of undergraduate and graduate voice majors, accompanied by the stellar Early Music Ensemble.
