"Visualizing Mobility in the Work of Eadweard Muybridge"

Tim Cresswell, University of London

Eadweard Muybridge was a pioneer in the capture of motion through photography in the last decades of the Nineteenth Century. Through both a close examination of selected Muybridge images and a general account of changing “constellations of mobility” in the United States in the Nineteenth Century, this talk places Muybridge’s photographic practice within a the theorization of mobilities in the modern world. By tracing Muybridge’s influence forward it is possible to see how elements of the past erupt into our present understanding of mobiity and vision.
