DJ Emancipacion and DJ Rumorosa are among the leading DJ’s and musicians of the San Francisco Bay Area’s queer club scene. They are also community based activists committed to racial, class, gender, queer, and anti-war based movements. They will discuss the significance of mixing and performing music to building queer community-based alliances and the development of gathering spaces for queer women and trans people to gather. Their lecture will be followed by a performance.

DJ Emancipacion (www.djemancipacion.com) draws inspiration through sound from people’s movements for freedom and liberation. She takes you on a journey through Africa (her homeland) via Chicago (her birthplace), tracing tribal roots, future dubs, and lots of soul. She will dance you through deep African house to cumbia and dancehall to classic R&B, all the while paying homage to the liberation songs of the people.

DJ Rumorosa describes her sound as Tropical and Nuevo Latino. Her work emphasizes Cumbia, but not just Colombian- also Peruvian, Argentine, Chicano, and Mexican Cumbia. She also focuses on electronic/ soulful house, international and classic hip hop, reggaeton, dancehall, salsa, disco and funk.
