Native Alliance Wooyake Series: Haaland v. Brackeen: What Educators Need to Know to Support Native Families
Join Lindsay Early, Deputy Director of the National Indian Child Welfare Association, and David Simmons, Director of Government Affairs and Advocacy as they discuss the Haaland v. Brackeen Supreme Court case. The case was brought by the states of Texas, Louisiana, and Indiana, and individual plaintiffs, and seeks to declare the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) unconstitutional. The Indian Child Welfare Act was enacted to protect Native children and families by ensuring Native children remained connected to their culture. Lindsay Early is a member of the Comanche Nation and a 2016 Oklahoma City corps member, and her work with Teach for America was recognized in President Barack Obama’s speech at the eighth annual Honoring Nations Summit in Washington, D.C. David Simmons has over thirty years of experience in child welfare and advocates for policies that support Native children and families.
