1989 is a new, devised performance that centers on Irina Nistor, a TV translator in Romania who secretly dubbed thousands of American movies that were censored under the oppressive dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu. She voiced every role in the movies — from Sylvestor Stallone in Rocky to Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray in Dirty Dancing, and neighbors and friends would gather illegally to watch the videos behind closed doors. 1989 explores the final months leading up to the 1989 Romanian revolution through the lens of these “video nights” — through the relationships among those who watched the movies and navigated their interactions in the shadow of extreme austerity and authoritarian rule.

Performers: Isabel Chilian, Tatiana Cloobeck, Maia Drone, Sam Labowitz, CC Meade, Ulises Otero, Ella Saliba, Jack Weaver Director: Zoe Aja Moore Assistant Director: Tiara Partsch Dramaturgs: Reese Leif, Carter Van Erp Costume: Jean Nardone Lighting: Taylor Scott
