For his PAT senior thesis, Tanner has programmed an array of effects that process the sound of the cello for performance. As a culmination of this project, this recital presents the various effects to demonstrate how technology can augment acoustic instruments and expressivity. The first piece showcases a harmonizer that re-pitches the cello sound into multiple voices of polyphony. The second piece is a composition for cello quintet that integrates various other effects simultaneously – to be performed with the four other seniors in Tanner’s cello studio. Finally, all acoustic sound from the cellos is captured and processed by contact-mic devices Tanner designed and built in the PAT workshop.
