Rackham Centennial Alumni Lecture: Bill Sullivan
SNRE alumnus explores 'Rising Above the Tide'

SNRE alumnus Bill Sullivan (Ph.D. '91) returns to campus to give a Rackham Centennial Alumni Lecture Oct. 25 in the Dana Building. Sullivan earned his doctoral degree in Landscape Architecture at the University of Michigan, and is a professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The U-M Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies is organizing the Rackham Centennial Alumni Lectures as part of its 100th anniversary celebration in 2012. The Rackham Centennial Alumni Lectures showcase the intellectual legacy of the university’s graduate community.
Abstract: Rising Above the Tide
These are incredibly demanding times for those of us working on the environment. Although the intellectual challenges we face are enormous and the consequences profound, the resources necessary to meet these challenges are too often scant. How can we be effective under such conditions? How, with shrinking resources and increasing demands on our time and attention, can we produce scholarship that contributes to positive change? In this talk I’ll suggest two ways forward, drawing on recent theoretical and experimental work on healthy environments and on my teaching experiences. First, I’ll address strategies for increasing the chances that our minds are clear and our spirits ready to handle the tasks at hand. Second, I’ll propose we apply our energies to strategic, high-impact activities that directly impact those spheres in which we seek to make a difference.
