Michigan Medicine invites you to participate in the annual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Symposium scheduled for October 20, 2023, at the Michigan League Grand Ballroom. This year's theme, "Beyond Awareness: Structural Change for Equity," focuses on fostering sustainable transformation in our healthcare system.
The event will kick off at 8 am with a continental breakfast and a captivating slideshow that offers glimpses into our diversity journey. The symposium's initial proceedings will be led by Dr. Katrina Wade-Golden, from the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, who will set the tone for a day filled with impactful discussions and innovative thinking.
The symposium aims to build a shared understanding of the DEI 2.0 strategy, showing its alignment with Michigan Medicine's DEI Strategic Plan and the broader U-M DEI 2.0 Strategic Plan. Symposium attendees will have a chance to understand how this plan has been informed and shaped by comprehensive data collection and analyses.
A series of executive mini-presentations will follow, featuring topics such as equitable and inclusive organizational policies, community collaborations, the use of data to drive action, and culturally appropriate patient care. These presentations will spotlight executive-level DEI initiatives, providing deeper insights into the range of DEI work at Michigan Medicine. The heart of the symposium will be a panel presentation where Michigan Medicine leaders from executive, student, workforce, patient, and community leadership will discuss DEI as a strategic priority. The panel features a diverse group of thought leaders including Dr. David C. Miller, Dr. David Brown, T. Anthony Denton, Dr. Steven L. Kunkel, Dr. Brook Watts, and Dr. Debra F. Weinstein.
After lunch and networking, the Student Diversity Council will highlight various Medical School diversity activities. The attendees will also learn about systemic and shared accountability measures with the reintroduction of Resource Groups and DEI leads structures. The symposium will conclude with a walkthrough of the Health Equity Roadmap, a comprehensive plan for improving health equity in our system.
