SMBC Meet & Greets - Risk, Finance, Product Control

Our SMBC Meet and Greet Series is for all students seeking a 2024 internship or analyst opportunity with our firm. Each session will consist of overviews of the various groups that hire into our programs led by the business members themselves followed by an open-forum Q&A session. Since each session will be different, students are encouraged to attend asmany as they like.

Risk Management (RMDAD)
The Risk Management Department, Americas Division comprehensively and dynamically manages the risksfacing SMBC across various risk stripes and categories. RMDAD plays a critical role in SMBC’s “second line of defense,” overseeing and monitoring risks across the firm, creating sound risk management policies, principles, and frameworks, and working to ensure strong controls are in place to manage and promote informed risk taking.

Finance
Financial Planning & Analysis
The Financial Planning & Analysis (“FP&A”) Group is responsible for managing financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting for the organization. The team provides senior management with a forecast of the organization’s income statement and operating performance, which informs progress of the organization’s strategic plans and uses data to advise management on key decisions on improving performance, mitigating risk, or identifying new growth opportunities.

Product Control Group
Product Control Function is responsible for the PnL reporting and its explanation, new trading activity for front desk, price/position verification and reconciliation. The position requires an in-depth understanding ofthe most trading product across all asset classes Equity, Fixed Income/Structured Products and FX. Key priorities for this position are ensuring all controls are being implemented accurately and timely. Its main responsibilities are to produce and analyze the daily trading activities, to report the PnL and to verify the values of positions held by the trading desks. This role requires extensive liaison with the front desks, middle/back office including Accounting, Operations, Risk Management and IT. ProductControl is expected to develop a good understanding of the products they monitor and of the strategies used by the trading desk to generate revenuefor the company.
